nodoca: an assessment without a nasal swab

Supporting the diagnosis of influenza and COVID-19

For people who find deep nasal swabs uncomfortable.

Our clinic has introduced nodoca, which uses AI to analyze throat images and symptoms. A dedicated camera photographs the throat to support influenza diagnosis. It also offers a function that assists with COVID-19 diagnosis.

We aim to reduce discomfort and make testing easier for patients. Please discuss your preference during your consultation.

Your doctor selects the appropriate test. Throat imaging can cause discomfort or gagging, and another test may be recommended when needed.

Choosing a test

We select a suitable method, such as nodoca or an antigen test, based on when symptoms began and the examination findings. A negative result does not completely rule out infection; symptoms and their course also guide our assessment.

Treatment tailored to your health

Rest and adequate fluids are important, with medicines for fever or pain when appropriate. We consider antiviral treatment based on time since symptom onset, age, underlying conditions and current medicines. Not everyone needs an antiviral.

Influenza antivirals are generally most effective when started within 48 hours of symptom onset. Older adults, pregnant people and those with underlying conditions should seek advice early, including for suspected COVID-19.

Seek prompt medical care for significant breathlessness, inability to drink or confusion. Call 119 for severe breathing difficulty or impaired consciousness.
