What hyperhidrosis means

Hyperhidrosis is sweating beyond what is needed for heat control that interferes with daily life. It may mainly affect the underarms or palms.

02

What we ask about

  • Affected areas, symmetry and impact on daily life
  • Age at onset and sweating during sleep
  • Fever, palpitations or weight change
  • Medication and conditions such as thyroid or glucose disorders
03

Treatment

Depending on the location and severity, treatment may include topical medication, iontophoresis or botulinum toxin injection. We assess possible causes and may refer you to dermatology or another specialist when appropriate.

04

Seek prompt care

Sudden generalized sweating, persistent night sweats, unintentional weight loss, fever, chest pain, breathlessness or faintness require prompt medical assessment. Severe chest pain, breathing difficulty or altered consciousness may require emergency care.
