Prevenar 20
Prevenar 20 is a 20-valent conjugate vaccine. For patients who qualify for the routine program, this is generally the vaccine used under that program.
CAPVAXIVE
CAPVAXIVE is a 21-valent conjugate vaccine designed for adult pneumococcal disease. It is available at our clinic as a self-pay option for appropriate adults who are not receiving the routine program.
Both are conjugate vaccines
Prevenar 20 and CAPVAXIVE both link pneumococcal capsule components to a carrier protein.
How we choose
We generally use Prevenar 20 for an eligible routine vaccination and discuss CAPVAXIVE as a self-pay option where appropriate. For adults aged 65 or older, the eighth joint Japanese society statement includes PCV21 at least one year after PCV13 or PCV20, among other prior pneumococcal vaccines. Additional vaccination is considered individually based on medical conditions, infection risk and vaccination history.
Common reactions
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site, fatigue, headache, muscle aches or fever may occur. Severe allergic reactions are rare but require urgent medical attention.
