Conditions and patient information
We assess prostate enlargement and prostatitis, blood in the urine, urinary infections, frequent or difficult urination, urinary stones and urologic cancers. We discuss treatment or follow-up based on symptoms and findings, and coordinate referral when specialist testing or treatment is required.
A raised PSA result alone does not diagnose prostate cancer. We consider current and previous results together with the condition of the prostate and other findings.
Assessment and appropriate tests
We review when symptoms started, fever or pain, previous conditions and treatments, and current medicines before choosing tests.
- Urinalysis and, when needed, urine culture assess blood, signs of infection and the bacteria involved.
- Blood tests assess kidney function, inflammation and, when appropriate, PSA.
- Ultrasound, X-ray or CT is selected when needed to assess the urinary tract or stones.
A urine sample may be needed. If possible, arrive able to provide a sample, but do not endure severe pain to hold urine.
